Joe Riley is an interdisciplinary artist and environmental historian. Through research spanning the studio, laboratory, and archives, his recent projects critically examine the hydro-politics of knowledge, infrastructures, and the commodification of marine life. His collaborative works with  and the collective  have been exhibited at venues including Getty Pacific Standard Time, Clockshop, Socrates Sculpture Park, Artes Mundi 7, and Sharjah Biennale 13. From 2020-2024, Joe was a participating artist, co-author, and co-curator of the Getty PST “Art & Science”  initiative at UC San Diego. His forthcoming project, , visualizes marine environmental knowledge through the collective making and use of watercraft(s): vessels for critical thought and action. Joe received a PhD in Art History and Art Practice from UCSD, with a specialization in Interdisciplinary Environmental Research from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He also holds a BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. Joe’s research has been supported by the Getty Scholars Program Predoctoral Fellowship, Rita L. Atkinson Graduate Fellowship, an Ocean Fellowship with TBA21-Academy Ocean Space, among other awards. Prior to joining Reed College as an Assistant Professor of Art, Joe taught at UC San Diego, CalState San Marcos, Stevens Institute of Technology, and The Cooper Union.
